Basic Art Glass Supplies for Fusing Glass

The following list includes some of the art glass supplies needed for beginning glass fusing. However, this is a very “basic” list of safety equipment, glass cutting equipment, and glass fusing equipment.

  • Kiln and kiln shelf that has been prepared for firing. This takes some time so it should be done first. Your kiln choice is probably one of the most important that you will make. We have some kiln recommendations.

  • Safety goggles for cutting glass – these should be clear lens goggles

  • Dust mask and respirator.

  • Fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

  • Glass cutter, glass cutting oil, and glass cutting pliers

  • Glass (make sure that all the pieces of glass are the same COE)

  • Kiln wash or kiln shelf paper and a haik brush

  • Glass Cleaner – the glass should be cleaned very carefully before and after cutting. Even a small particle of dirt can interfere with the cutting of the glass. In the same way, every fingerprint or smudge will show up in the fusing process and ruin your work of art.

  • Watch or timer

  • Way to measure temperature (if you do not have a programmable kiln)

  • Glue (Elmer’s blue gel glue), thinned with water – use sparingly

  • Heat Resistant Gloves

  • Safety Goggles with IR and UV Protection. These are a must when looking into the kiln – even through the “peep hole”.

  • Camera – take a photo of the glass as it enters the kiln – take notes on everything that you did in the process, including the temperatures and timing. The “record keeping” is called a firing log. Then take another photo of the finished project.

As you continue to fuse glass, you will probably see the need for other art glass supplies. We use our grinder and our glass saw more often than our kiln. Our shock proof mats that we have placed in our studio are wonderful. Fusing glass is fun, but it can be quite expensive. But you don’t have to buy everything at once. Have fun!!! Experiment with new designs. Fusing art glass and making dichroic jewelry may begin as a hobby but it will become a passion!!!
